\nBang Pae Waterfall<\/strong> is Phuket’s largest waterfall, within the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-Hunting Area in Pa Klok, Thalang District, in the northeast of the island. It is reached by a 10\u201315 minute jungle trail from a paved car park off Highway 4027, and draws visitors for swimming in the rock pools as well as access to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project at the entrance. Bang Pae Waterfall is Phuket’s largest waterfall, in the Pa Klok subdistrict of Thalang District, in the northeast of the island. It sits inside the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-Hunting Area \u2014 the last significant stretch of primary rainforest on Phuket \u2014 at the end of a jungle trail that takes about 15 minutes to walk. The falls are the reason people come. The forest is what they remember from the visit.<\/p>

The Forest First<\/strong><\/h3>

The trail from the car park follows the stream. Fig roots cross the path. The canopy thickens as the ground rises, and the light drops from open sky to a green-filtered shade that makes the whole setting feel cooler than it is. The sound of the water arrives before the clearing does.<\/p>

This is Khao Phra Thaeo: not replanted, not managed for tourism, not the secondary growth that covers most of Phuket’s inland hills. The trees are old. The undergrowth is dense. The place has a quality unlike anything on the West Coast, and it is worth saying so directly because it is what earns the trip, not the waterfall alone.<\/p>

The Drop<\/strong><\/h3>

The main fall is a single vertical drop of 10-15 meters onto a granite base. Sources give different figures; no official measurement is posted on the site. What is not in dispute is its character: direct and unspread, running hard off the rock face in the wet season, audible from the trail before the clearing opens up.<\/p>

In the dry months, the same drop can become a narrow channel of water tracking down the granite rather than falling clear of it. March and April are often genuinely poor. Visitors who arrive in those months expecting the images that circulate online \u2014 white water, full volume, the rock face under pressure \u2014 will find something considerably quieter. That is the honest position.<\/p>

Below the main fall, the stream moves through a series of rock pools. These are where most swimming happens. The water runs cold, the footing is uneven granite, and the trail beside the pools is slippery enough in wet conditions that it demands attention rather than an assumption of safety.<\/p>

When the Rain Arrives<\/strong><\/h3>

June is the beginning. By July, the falls are running at full force, the trail is a humid tunnel, and the rock pools fill to swimmable depth. This continues through November and into December \u2014 five to six months of the waterfall at its best. The mosquitoes are heavier in these months. The trail is wetter. Flash flooding is possible during extreme rainfall, and the park staff will close access when the risk warrants it. None of this should discourage the visit. It is simply what a functioning rainforest looks like when it is raining.<\/p>

The dry months \u2014 roughly January through April, with February to April the most pronounced \u2014 are a different calculation. The forest remains. The trail remains. The light through the canopy on a clear January morning has its own quality. But the waterfall, which is why most people make the drive to Pa Klok, is unreliable after January.<\/p>

The Gibbons<\/strong><\/h3>

At the entrance, before the trail begins, the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project runs a separate but adjacent operation from the same car park. It takes in gibbons rescued from the illegal pet trade and works toward releasing them into Khao Phra Thaeo \u2014 the same forest the waterfall is in. Visitors walk through the enclosure area on a donation basis.<\/p>

Most people end up doing both. The two are close enough that separating them would require a deliberate decision to skip one of them. Together they give the visit a fuller account of what Khao Phra Thaeo actually is: a working habitat, not just a scenic backdrop.<\/p>

The Practical Truth<\/strong><\/h3>

Entry is 200 THB for foreign visitors and 20 THB for Thai nationals. The ticket is also valid for Ton Sai Waterfall on the same day \u2014 Ton Sai is on the western side of the same ridge, accessed from a separate entrance near the Heroines’ Monument. The two falls are linked by an 8-kilometer cross-mountain trail requiring a guide; most visitors reach each by road.<\/p>

The car park off Highway 4027 is large and paved. Restaurants and restrooms are near the entrance. The trail to the falls is established but uneven \u2014 stone steps, exposed roots, stretches of wet rock. Footwear that grips matters more than footwear that looks appropriate for a jungle. Mosquito repellent is not optional.<\/p>

Northeast Phuket<\/strong><\/h3>

Bang Pae sits approximately 18 kilometers north of Phuket Town and around 9 kilometers east of the Heroines’ Monument \u2014 far enough from the resort corridors of Patong and Kata that it requires a deliberate drive rather than a convenient detour. Pa Klok and Thalang are quieter than most of the island: no beach resorts, less traffic, a different pace. The car park fills on weekends. On weekday mornings it is close to empty.<\/p>

The east side of Phuket invites you to visit on its own terms. Bang Pae is the strongest reason to make that case.<\/p>
