Phuket\u2019s Por Tor Festival<\/strong>, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, is a Hokkien Chinese tradition centred on ancestor remembrance, food offerings and shrine ceremonies. Red turtle cakes called ang ku are its best-known local symbol. Dates follow the Chinese lunar calendar and must be confirmed each year.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Por Tor is one of Phuket\u2019s most distinctive Hokkien Chinese traditions. Often translated as the Hungry Ghost Festival, it is a period when families remember departed relatives, prepare food and make offerings for spirits believed to return temporarily to the world of the living.<\/p>\n\n

What Por Tor Means<\/h3>\n

The festival takes place during the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar. According to tradition, the gates of the spirit world open during this period, allowing the dead to return and receive food, incense and other offerings from their families.<\/p>\n\n

The observance is not simply about ghosts or frightening images of the afterlife. Its central themes are remembrance, family duty, compassion and respect for ancestors. Offerings may also be made for spirits who died far from home or without relatives able to care for them.<\/p>\n\n

Family and Shrine Offerings<\/h3>\n

Families traditionally prepare a table of food for departed relatives. Incense is placed with the meal, and the living wait before eating to allow the spirits time to receive the offering first.<\/p>\n\n

Phuket\u2019s Chinese shrines also organise ceremonies and receive food, rice, fruit and other donations. Por Tor Gong Shrine near Saphan Hin is particularly associated with the festival, while other Hokkien shrines and community organisations hold their own events.<\/p>\n\n

Phuket\u2019s Red Turtle Cakes<\/h3>\n

The most recognisable Por Tor offering in Phuket is the red turtle cake, known in Hokkien as ang ku. The turtle represents longevity, while red is associated with good fortune, success and prosperity.<\/p>\n\n

Cakes may carry wishes for good health or good luck together with the name of the family, organisation or business making the offering. Some are small enough for a family altar, while others are elaborate ceremonial pieces prepared for a shrine or public gathering.<\/p>\n\n

The turtles are visually striking, but they are religious and community offerings rather than festival decorations.<\/p>\n\n
