\n\nSongkran marks the Thai New Year and is celebrated in Phuket from 13 April. Public water fights are the festival\u2019s most visible feature, but its older traditions centre on family reunions, temple visits, merit-making, cleaning and showing respect to elders.\n\n<\/div>\nSongkran is one of Thailand\u2019s most important annual celebrations. In Phuket, the streets may fill with water, buckets and water guns, but the festival has a deeper meaning than the public water battles for which it is now famous.\n\nIt is a time of renewal, when families come together, homes are cleaned, temples are visited and the old year is symbolically left behind.\n

The Meaning of Songkran<\/h3>\nThe name Songkran is derived from the Sanskrit word Sankranti<\/em>, referring to movement or change. The cleaning is both practical and symbolic, removing the misfortune of the previous year and making way for a fresh beginning.\n\nOn the morning of Songkran, people may visit a temple to make merit, offer food to monks and take part in prayers and ceremonies. Water may also be poured onto the ground or at the roots of an old tree as a blessing for ancestors.\n

Family and Respect for Elders<\/h3>\nSongkran is an important family holiday. Thais living away from their home towns often return to visit relatives, making the period around the festival one of the busiest times of the year for domestic travel.\n\nOne of the festival\u2019s most meaningful customs is the gentle pouring of scented water over the hands of parents, grandparents and other respected elders. Younger family members ask for forgiveness and blessings, while elders offer wishes for health, happiness and prosperity in the year ahead.\n\nIn some communities, young people also present elderly relatives with new clothes for the coming year.\n

Temple Ceremonies and Buddha Images<\/h3>\nWater has long been associated with purification and renewal during Songkran. In some towns and villages, Buddha images are carried through the streets in processions, allowing people to sprinkle them respectfully with water.\n\nTemples and local communities may also organise merit-making ceremonies, traditional performances and activities honouring older residents. These quieter customs remain an important part of Songkran even where large public water fights attract most of the attention.\n

Songkran on the Streets of Phuket<\/h3>\nIn Phuket, public water play has traditionally been particularly lively in Patong, Phuket City and Rawai. Residents and visitors take to the streets with buckets, hoses and water guns, while groups travel around in the backs of pick-up trucks carrying large containers of water.\n\nThe atmosphere can be friendly and good-humoured, but anyone entering a busy celebration area should expect to become completely soaked. Officials, police officers and people travelling through the area are rarely exempt.\n\nWater fights may continue for several hours, especially in busy commercial and nightlife areas.
