Wat Suwan Khiri Khet, commonly known as Wat Karon, is a Buddhist temple complex located in Karon in southwest Phuket. The temple serves as the main religious centre for the Karon community and contains traditional temple buildings including an ordination hall, assembly halls, and monk residences within a walled compound along Patak Road.

Overview

Wat Karon, formally known as Wat Suwan Khiri Khet, is a Buddhist temple complex located in Karon in the southwestern region of Phuket. The temple serves as the main religious centre for the Karon community, supporting daily worship activities, merit-making rituals, and local Buddhist ceremonies.

The temple compound sits slightly inland from Karon Beach along Patak Road, the main road running through the town. Its position places the temple within the central Karon settlement, surrounded by residential areas, schools, and the coastal tourism district.

Wat Karon is also known for hosting the Karon Temple Market twice each week. During market evenings the open courtyard of the temple becomes a large temporary marketplace while the religious buildings continue to function as places of worship.

Temple Grounds

The Wat Karon compound is arranged as a rectangular temple complex facing Patak Road. The front portion of the grounds contains a large paved courtyard used for parking and public gatherings.

At the centre of the compound stands the ubosot, or ordination hall, which is accessed by steps guarded by two green Naga serpent sculptures. This building serves as the primary ceremonial structure of the temple.

Nearby stands a viharn prayer hall containing Buddha images used for daily worship. Additional structures within the grounds include monks’ residence buildings, a bell tower, and a crematorium located toward the quieter rear section of the temple compound.

Activity at the Temple

Visitors typically enter through the main gate from Patak Road and walk across the open courtyard toward the temple buildings. Worshippers commonly light incense, place lotus flowers or candles, and spend time inside the viharn near the Buddha statues.

Some visitors apply gold leaf to Buddha images or leave donations at offering boxes positioned around the temple halls. Visits are usually brief and focused on specific acts of merit-making.

On market evenings the activity pattern changes significantly as the temple courtyard fills with food vendors and market stalls while the temple buildings continue to receive worshippers.

Daily Rhythm

Temple activity generally occurs throughout the day, with many local visitors arriving during the morning and late afternoon periods to make offerings.

Buddhist holy days bring increased activity as residents visit to participate in merit-making rituals and religious observances.

Tuesdays and Fridays follow a different rhythm due to the Karon Temple Market. During these evenings the courtyard becomes crowded between approximately 16:00 and 22:00 as vendors set up stalls and visitors move through the market area.

Practical Setting

The temple courtyard provides open walking space and parking areas within the compound. Basic facilities such as public toilets are available inside the grounds.

Visitors entering the ubosot or viharn are expected to remove footwear before stepping inside. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is generally expected in accordance with Thai temple etiquette.

During market evenings the courtyard becomes densely filled with stalls, which significantly reduces available parking. Shade is also limited across the open paved areas during the daytime.

Role Within Phuket

Wat Karon functions primarily as the community temple serving the Karon area. The temple supports local religious life through ceremonies, funerals, and Buddhist festival gatherings.

Compared with larger temple complexes such as Wat Chalong, Wat Karon operates on a smaller scale and serves a more localized population.

Its regular temple market has also made the site a known community gathering point within the Karon coastal district.
