Merlin Beach Phuket

Overview

Merlin Beach is a short, semi-enclosed beach on Phuket’s west coast in Kathu District. The beach is public by law, although most land access passes through or beside the adjacent resort. It is quieter than Patong and protected by headlands.

Coral Reef Zone

A shallow coral reef flat runs across much of the bay. At low tide, rocks and coral are exposed, making swimming difficult. At high tide, the reef supports visible fish life and is suitable for snorkeling with care.

Resort Frontage Zone

The central section of the beach fronts the Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa. Hotel loungers and facilities are set back on private land, not on the public sand. The beach itself remains accessible for non-guests.

Southern Rocky Edge

The southern end is bordered by rocks and trees and is often quieter. Entry to the water here is rocky, and reef shoes are commonly used by visitors.

Safety

The beach is unpatrolled. Sharp rocks, coral, and sea urchins are present. Currents may occur near the headlands, especially during rough weather. Swimming is not recommended at low tide.

Seasonality

During the dry season, water clarity is highest and snorkeling conditions are best at high tide. In the monsoon season, waves are usually smaller than on open beaches, but visibility decreases.

Facilities & Services

There are no public toilets or showers on the beach. Small independent massage huts operate at the edges of the beach. Food and drinks are available inside the resort at higher prices.

Rules & Conservation

Walking on exposed coral damages the reef and can cause injury. Visitors are advised to avoid standing on coral and to use reef-safe behavior when snorkeling.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is generally quiet and relaxed, attracting snorkelers, families, and visitors looking for calmer conditions than nearby Patong.

Nearby Beaches

Tri Trang Beach lies to the north and is longer and more open. Freedom Beach and Paradise Beach are located further south and are accessible by boat or trail.

Merlin Beach is reached via Muen-Ngoen Road south of Patong. Visitors can walk along a public path beside the resort or arrive by longtail boat from Patong.
