Wat Phra Thong is a Buddhist temple complex located in Ban Na Nai in Thep Krasattri subdistrict, Thalang, in northern Phuket. It is one of Phuket’s historically established temples and functions both as a place of worship and as a local heritage site.

The temple is also known as Wat Phra Phut and Wat Na Nai. In local usage, Wat Phra Phut refers specifically to the temple’s best-known image, Luang Poh Phra Thong, a Buddha figure that appears to rise only partly above ground.

Temple Grounds

The compound is spread across a broad roadside site with several detached buildings arranged around open paved areas. The main public focus is the viharn housing the half-buried Buddha image, while the ubosot, bell tower, museum building, cremation area, and monk residential zones sit around the wider grounds.

The public devotional area is concentrated near the central halls. The museum stands as a separate destination within the compound, while monk residences are set back from the main visitor flow and are not part of the usual circulation pattern.

Activity at the Temple

Daily use centres on worship and merit-making. Visitors light incense, place flowers, make donations, and spend time in front of the main image before moving through the surrounding buildings.

The temple also functions as a community religious space for funerary rites and other district-level activities. The museum adds an educational layer, with displays connected to Thalang’s local history, household tools, ceramics, and older material culture.

Daily Rhythm

The temple grounds generally operate during daylight hours, with activity building in the morning and again in the late afternoon. Local worship is often strongest between around 09:00 and 11:00, while weekends bring a steadier flow of non-local visitors.

Festival periods change the site’s rhythm. Activity increases during the Lunar New Year and during events linked to the Thalang Heroines commemorations, when the district receives more concentrated religious and cultural traffic.

Practical Setting

The grounds include a large paved parking area, public toilets, donation points, and an open courtyard walking space. Most movement is straightforward because the site is relatively flat, although some buildings require a few steps at the entrance.

The main practical limitations are heat exposure in the open areas and variable museum access. Dress standards remain those of a working temple complex, with shoulders and knees covered and footwear removed before entering the main religious halls.

Role Within Phuket

Within Phuket’s temple landscape, Wat Phra Thong functions as a district-level temple with a strong historical identity. It attracts local worshippers from Thalang as well as visitors interested in the temple’s unusual central image and its connection to older narratives of the area.

Compared with Wat Chalong, Wat Phra Thong has lower visitor volume and retains a more district-based pattern of use. Its importance lies less in scale than in the singular identity of the half-buried Buddha image and the temple’s historical associations with Thalang. It forms part of the Phuket Temples cluster and connects with nearby northern Phuket sites including Wat Phra Nang Sang, the Heroines Monument, and the Thalang National Museum.

Location

Wat Phra Thong stands directly off Thep Krasattri Road (Route 402), Phuket’s main north-south road. The main gate is easy to identify from the roadside, and the temple sits roughly 500 metres north of the Thalang District Office and Thalang Police Station.

The location is around 20 kilometres north of Phuket Town and about 10 kilometres south of Phuket International Airport. Access is most practical by car or motorbike, although the main north-south songthaew route also passes through the Thalang corridor.
