Phuket’s viewpoints range from easy coastal stops and classic sunset locations to high hill panoramas and the dramatic limestone landscape of Samet Nangshe in neighbouring Phang Nga. This guide compares five viewpoints by scenery, access, atmosphere and photography value.

Phuket’s viewpoints are not interchangeable. Some are brief roadside stops, some work best near sunset, and others are destinations that justify a longer drive.
Promthep Cape provides the island’s best-known sunset setting. Windmill Viewpoint is smaller and less formal. Karon Viewpoint explains the shape of the southern west coast in one frame, while Khao Khad Views Tower offers a broader inland and east-coast perspective.
Samet Nangshe is different again. It lies outside Phuket in Phang Nga and should be treated as a planned excursion rather than another stop on the southern viewpoint route.

Promthep Cape
Rawai · Southern Phuket
Promthep Cape is Phuket’s most established sunset viewpoint and the easiest choice for a first-time visitor who wants a broad sea horizon and a recognisable southern-island setting.
The developed viewing area is straightforward to reach, but popularity is also its main weakness. Sunset brings tour vehicles, parked cars and large numbers of visitors arriving within the same short period.
The upper viewing area is enough for most visitors. The steeper route down towards the cape is optional and should only be attempted with suitable footwear, enough daylight and realistic judgement about the return climb.
Windmill Viewpoint
Between Nai Harn and Ya Nui · Southern Phuket
Windmill Viewpoint is smaller, simpler and generally less formal than Promthep Cape. It sits above the coast between Nai Harn and Ya Nui, with views across the sea, the nearby headland and the small bay below.
It works well for visitors already exploring southern Phuket and for photographers who prefer a viewpoint that feels more like a roadside stop than a developed attraction.
Parking space is limited, and the roadside position requires attention when vehicles are arriving or leaving. It is best treated as a short stop rather than a place for a long visit.
Karon Viewpoint
Coastal road south of Kata · Western Phuket
Karon Viewpoint gives the clearest layered view of Kata Noi, Kata and Karon bays. It is the most useful viewpoint for understanding how the beaches, headlands and developed areas of the southern west coast fit together.
The viewing platform is close to the road and requires little walking. It is therefore easy to include in a longer southern route, but tour traffic can arrive in bursts and briefly change the atmosphere.
This is usually a short photographic stop rather than a half-day destination. Clear daytime weather matters more here than sunset, because the strength of the view comes from seeing the three bays distinctly.
Khao Khad Views Tower
Cape Panwa area · South-eastern Phuket
Khao Khad Views Tower offers a different understanding of Phuket. Rather than looking only towards the open Andaman coast, it provides a broad perspective across Cape Panwa, Chalong Bay, surrounding hills, offshore islands and parts of the central island.
The tower is reached by climbing the staircase from the parking area. The reward is a higher and more complete geographical view than the short roadside platforms on the west coast.
It is usually quieter than Phuket’s better-known southern viewpoints. Clear air is important, because haze can reduce the long-distance detail that makes the tower worthwhile.
Samet Nangshe Viewpoint
Takua Thung · Phang Nga Province
Samet Nangshe is the most dramatic viewpoint in this guide, but it is not in Phuket. It lies across the bridge in Phang Nga Province and should be planned as a separate excursion.
The view combines mangrove forest, winding tidal channels and the limestone formations of Phang Nga Bay. The landscape is larger and more complex than the roadside coastal viewpoints on Phuket.
Dawn is the classic time to visit, but it requires an early departure and suitable transport. There are several viewing businesses and platforms in the wider Samet Nangshe area, and access arrangements, charges and final transport to the upper viewing areas can change. Confirm the exact destination before leaving.
How to combine the viewpoints
The five viewpoints do not belong in one continuous driving route. They divide naturally into three separate outings.
Karon Viewpoint, Windmill Viewpoint and Promthep Cape can be combined in that order, ending at Promthep if sunset is the priority.
Khao Khad Views Tower works better with Cape Panwa, Ao Yon or Phuket Town than with the southern west-coast viewpoints.
Samet Nangshe requires its own journey and should not be treated as a quick extension of a normal Phuket sightseeing route.
Practical notes
- Clear weather matters more than the season printed on a calendar. Haze and low cloud can flatten even the strongest viewpoint.
- Roadside viewpoints require extra care when entering traffic, parking or crossing near bends.
- Sunset is not automatically the best time for every viewpoint. Karon and Khao Khad often work better while the landscape is clearly visible.
- Carry water and use sun protection. Even short stops can feel exposed in the middle of the day.
- Samet Nangshe is outside Phuket, and access arrangements can change. Check the selected Google Maps pin and current visitor information before departure.
