Kalim Beach Phuket

Kalim Beach Phuket is a public west-coast beach just north of Patong. It has a rocky shoreline, limited swimming, seasonal surf during monsoon months, and is best known for sunset views and evening street food stalls along the coastal road. Updated: 14/12/2025

Overview

Kalim Beach is located immediately north of Patong Beach in Kathu District, Phuket. It forms part of the same bay system as Patong but has a distinctly rockier coastline. The beach is publicly accessible from the coastal road connecting Patong and Kamala.

Rocky Reef Zone

Most of Kalim Beach consists of exposed rock formations and dead coral. At low tide, rocks dominate the shoreline, making swimming difficult. Shallow rock pools appear in calm conditions and may hold small marine life.

Southern End (Patong Side)

The southern section is closest to Patong and has the roughest seabed with a steeper drop-off. Waves and submerged rocks make this area unsuitable for casual swimming, especially during the monsoon season.

Northern End (Toward Kamala)

The northern stretch opens slightly toward Kamala and has marginally calmer water in high season. Sand patches appear at high tide, but rocky ground remains present throughout.

Safety

Swimming is not recommended at low tide due to exposed rocks and sharp coral. During the monsoon season, strong waves and rip currents can occur, and waves may break over rocks. There is no permanent lifeguard station.

Seasonality

From November to April, sea conditions are calmer but still rocky. From May to October, monsoon swells reach the beach, attracting surfers while increasing the risk for swimmers. Jellyfish are more commonly reported during the rainy season.

Facilities & Services

There are no public toilets, showers, or sunbed rentals on the beach. Food and drinks are available from roadside stalls, especially in the evening, and from restaurants across the road. Parking is available along the roadside.

Rules & Conservation

Kalim Beach is a public beach with no entrance fee. Visitors are advised not to remove rocks or coral and to avoid walking on exposed reef areas. Waste disposal depends on nearby bins and businesses.

Atmosphere

The beach is quieter than Patong and is used mainly for walking, photography, sunsets, and food stops rather than sunbathing. Evenings are livelier due to street food stalls and sunset viewers.
